We would like to present a list of all published Bridge Books, and would like to make this list as comprehensive as possible. There are many bridge authors who have contributed to the learning of the game, and we would like to recognize them with our efforts. We also realize that many bridge book authors have published other books on different subjects, but we have not included these titles. We have also attempted to include as many international authors as possible. If a certain book is not listed, please notify us, and we shall include it. We need your help in compiling this list, because you, the reader and visitor, are our best asset and source.
The authors have been listed alphabetically.
The dates given are an uncertain factor since many bridge books have been re-edited, re-named, re-worked, re-published, re-printed, and re-issued. We have not added a link to a Website, where you may order a particular book. There are several Internet addresses where you can order a particular book. Following are some helpful hints:
We have also given credit to those bridge players who are not the author, but have co-authored, contributed to, edited or illustrated the bridge book before the publishing date. We have tried to give credit to those ladies who have published bridge books before their marriage, and afterwards changing their last names. It must be noted that some of the bridge books are no longer printed, or are being reprinted, and are not available at this time. It is also possible that some bridge books, which are being edited for re-publication, are listed as not available. We can not be certain that a bridge book is out of print. Please be sure to check.
ISBN: This is a unique machine-readable 10-digit identification number, which marks any book unmistakably, and over 160 countries and territories are officially ISBN members. This system of cataloging has been in effect since the early 1970s and earlier publications, unless reprinted, do not always carry such an ISBN number. Books published in countries not bound by the ISBN number are also included.
Every ISBN will consist of thirteen digits beginning 2007. The thirteen digit number is divided into five parts of variable length, each part separated by a hyphen.
The ISBN identification number is also unique to the Publishing House. Therefore, books by authors who have their works published by other publishing houses carry a different ISBN identification number. The ISBN identification number is therefore also a means employed to identify the individual publishing house. As a consequence, the included ISBN identification number is the number used by the specified Publishing Company, not for all publications and reprints of the book.
EAN.UCC: As of January 1, 2007, the book industry has begun using 13-digit ISBNs to identify all books in supply chain. Two new prefixes are being created. The 978 prefix will be added in front of the current ISBN-10 and with the addition of a new check digit at the end, the new ISBN-13 is created. This change is taking place to fully align the numbering system for books with the global EAN.UCC identification system that is widely used to identify most other consumer goods worldwide.
ISSN: The ISSN (International Standard Serial Number) is an eight-digit number which identifies all periodical publications as such, including electronic serials. Each ISSN assigned to a serial publication is registered in an international database: the ISSN Register. It is the most comprehensive and authoritative source for the identification of serial publications world-wide. It is managed by a world wide network of 81 National Centres coordinated by an International Centre based in Paris, backed by Unesco and the French Government. The ISSN is used by various partners throughout the information chain: libraries, subscription agents, researchers, information scientists, newsagents (through its barcode version).
LC: An LC included in the description is the LC Control Number which is the identification number for indexing and cataloging by the Library of Congress.
ASIN: The Amazon Standard Identification Number (ASIN) is a product identification number used by Amazon.com. Despite the name, it is not a "standard" in any real sense, and is valid only for referring to products within the Amazon.com network of sites. Also known as: Amazon Standard Item Number. This indentification number may be the identical number as the corresponding ISBN number or other cataloging numbers.
OCLC: Founded in 1967, OCLC Online Computer Library Center is a nonprofit, membership, computer library service and research organization dedicated to the public purposes of furthering access to the world's information and reducing information costs. More than 41,555 libraries in 112 countries and territories around the world use OCLC services to locate, acquire, catalog, lend and preserve library materials.

Whenever possible, we have included a link to a picture of the front cover of the respective book.
We have attempted to construct these pages with the least amount of inconvenience to the visitor. If, however, the first letters of the surnames of the authors do not match and are on different web pages, then the "back button" may take the visitor to the wrong section. Apologies in advance for this inconvenience but we have found no other solution.

Matula, Greg
The Polish Club, 1994, 91-87416-15-8, Scania Bridgekonsult AB), translated into English
Note: In 1963, a series of articles appeared in the Polish bridge magazine Brydz with the outline of a national bidding system, based on a nebulous 1 Club opening - the Polish Club. The readers enjoyed the idea, and the articles continued for another three years. Since then, many new ideas have been added, and Polish Club is today a mature and efficient system, well tested in international competition. Still, it has never before been presented to non-Polish readers. Mr. Greg Matula, of Warsaw, is one of Poland's leading players and writers. He has made a detailed description of the modern version of Polish Club, one of the best bidding systems today.

Simple Squeezes, 2007, Publisher: published privately by the author, United Kingdom.
Note from author: This is the first book in a series of eight on Bridge Squeezes and introduces the subject. It is aimed at experienced players who are ready to improve their playing ability and wish to understand more about these fascinating positions. Each position is shown as a diagram showing the cards remaining and how the position is played. There are then several examples taken from actual play, which are drawn from several sources – the author’s own experience, friends, books and newspaper articles. These examples show how the basic position was reached and the preparation needed to achieve it. The key requirements for a squeeze are explained in simple terms and each type of threat encountered is described and named. The five fundamental attributes and requirements for a squeeze are developed and explained and their relevance in executing a simple squeeze are developed.

Moore, Edward - (Pseudonym is Adam Fitzadam or Adam Fitz-Adam)
The World for the Year, One Thousand Seven Hundred and Fifty Three, London, England, Publisher: Robert & John Dodsley, 1753-6. Folio. 4 Volumes. First Edition with the original 209 numbers bound together. 'Through Lyttelton's influence Edward Moore was appointed in 1753 editor of 'The World', a weekly periodical started in that year, and devoted to satirising the vices and follies of fashionable society. With the exception of Edward Moore, who under the nom de guerre of Adam FitzAdam wrote sixty-one out of 210 numbers, the contributors were men of fashion (they included Lords Lyttelton, Bath, and Chesterfield, Soame Jenyns, Horace Walpole, and Edward Lovibond), and Edward Moore was permitted to take the entire profits of the venture. The circulation averaged from two thousand to three thousand copies. After a course of four years 'The World' was brought to a close with an announcement of the dangerous illness of the editor, and by a curious coincidence Edward Moore, who was then in good health, barely survived the revision of the collective edition, dying at his house in South Lambeth on March 1, 1757.

Note (quoted): Faculty of Mathematics and Information Science, Warsaw University of Technology, Plac Politechniki 1. Abstract: This paper describes the results of applying artificial neural networks to the double dummy bridge problem. Several feed-forward neural networks were trained using resilient back-propagation algorithm to estimate the number of tricks to take by players NS in fully revealed contract bridge deals. Training deals were the only data presented to the networks. The best networks were able to perfectly point the number of tricks in more than one third of deals and gained about 80% accuracy when one trick error was permitted. Only in less than 5% of deals the error exceeded 2 tricks. Source: Google Books.

New York Tribune, The
This newspaper was founded and established by Mr. Horace Greeley, 1800 1872, in the year 1841 and was long considered one of the leading newspapers in the United States. In 1924 the newspaper was merged with the New York Herald to form the New York Herald Tribune, which ceased publication in 1967. Mr. Horace Greeley, with his newspaper, reported on everything happening in the world because he believed that information was knowledge, and that knowledge was power.
To this extent he was primary in establishing the modern newspaper innovation of annual Almanacs and Registers. The link, a .pdf file, is a short summary offered for that period because the 'scientific' game of Whist was considered a sport, a gambling adventure, a leisure activity, and a pastime. The attempt has been made to present the The Tribune Almanac and Political Register of 1901 and include the text listed under Sports - Whist. This particular issue celebrated the turn of the century from the 1800s to the 1900s, which, as the unnamed editorialist particularly noted, occurs in only a second.

Turning Tricks, September 17, 2007, Publisher: The New Yorker, a prestigious magazine in New York, United States. Mr. David Owen, composed an essay on the evolution of the game of bridge in the borders of the United States and provides insight into the promotions of Mr. Ely Culbertson and Mr. Charles Goren. It is for these reasons that Mr. David Owen is included in this list. His rather famous essay, within the confines of the bridge community, was never published in book form.

Note: The Royal Society of London for the Improvement of Natural Knowledge, known simply as the Royal Society, or even the Royal, is a learned society for science that was founded in 1660 and is considered by most to be the oldest such society still in existence. Although a voluntary body, it serves as the academy of sciences of the United Kingdom (in which role it receives funding from HM Government). Fellowship, granted for life, is awarded to scientists after their election by existing fellows, and is considered a great honour. Fellows must be citizens of a member of the Commonwealth of Nations or the Republic of Ireland, while the smaller number of Foreign Members are drawn from other countries. The Royal Society is a member organization of the Science Council. The Royal Society was founded in 1660, only a few months after the Restoration of King Charles II, by members of one or two either secretive or informal societies already in existence. The Royal Society enjoyed the confidence and official support of the restored monarchy.
Short Summary: He was a man of many accomplishments. Having spent his earlier years in various engineering occupations in England, he went out to India in 1844 as professor of engineering at Elphinstone College, Bombay, where he had to first organize the course of instruction for native students, but his health obliged him to return to England in 1848. For the following ten years he worked in London under James Simpson and James Meadows Rendel, and the high reputation he achieved as a scientific engineer gained his appointment in 1859 to the chair of civil engineering in University College, London. He obtained a considerable amount of official work from the government. He served on the committees which considered the application of armour to ships and fortifications (1861-1864), and the comparative advantages of Whitworth and Armstrong guns (1863-1865).
He was secretary to the Royal Commission on Railways (1865-1867), the Duke of Richmonds Commission on London Water (1867-1869), also taking part in the subsequent proceedings for establishing a constant supply, the Royal Commission on the Disposal of London Sewage (1882-1884), and the departmental committee on the science museums at South Kensington in 1885. In 1871 he was employed by the War Office to report on the Martini-Henry rifle, and in the same year was appointed consulting engineer in London to the Japanese government, a position through which he exercised considerable influence on the development of the Japanese railway system. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1861, in recognition of some investigations on color-blindness.
Music was also one of his chief interests. At the age of twenty-two he was appointed organist of St Marks, North Audley Street, in open competition, the next selected candidate being Dr E. J. Hopkins (1818-1901), who subsequently was for fifty years organist of the Temple Church. He took the degree of Bachelor of Music at Oxford in 1860, proceeding to his doctors degree in 1867, and in 1879 published his Philosophy of Music. He was largely concerned in the institution of musical degrees by the University of London in 1877, and for many years acted as one of the examiners. His mathematical tastes found congenial occupation in the study of whist, and as an exponent of the scientific principles of that game he was even earlier in the field than Cavendish. His literary work included treatises on the steam engine and on iron construction, biographical studies of famous engineers, including Robert Stephenson and Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Sir William Fairbairn and Sir William Siemens, several books on musical subjects and on whist, and many papers for reviews and scientific periodicals.

Synopsis: The innocuous game of bridge turned deadly in Kansas City, Mossouri, in the year 1929 when Mrs. Myrtle Bennett alledgedly fatally shot her husband in a dispute following his declaring the hand. In recounting this tale Mr. Gary Pomerantz introduces an ensemble of the more prominent 1920s characters ranging from Mr. Ely Culbertson, who helped fuel the new bridge craze, to Mr. Jim Reed, the United States senator from Kansas City, who successfully defended the socialite Mrs. Myrtle Bennett at the ensuing trial. As promoted by Mr. Ely Culbertson, bridge was a zone of equality between men and women - and the stage on which marital spats could escalate. The game is, as quoted by Mr. Ely Culbertson, a way to defuse the petty inhibitions and tensions of daily married life.

Posert, von
Note: The name is presumably a pseudonym of the author according to the Nominalkatalog der ULB Tirol. The designation itself is a bastardization of the French word poser, and translated into English as poseur, meaning one who affects a particular attribute, attitude, or identity to impress or influence others. The word also conveys the meaning of one who is pompous or a person who habitually pretends to be something he is not. The addition of the last letter does not change the root of the word. However, the addition of the von, meaning of or from, such as in German or Austrian the word precedes a place name and together they indicate traditional place of origin. In later years the addition of the word von strongly indicated a higher societal rank, the person accepted as a member of the aristocracy.

Note: The initials 'F. von H.' are not identified, but some clues in bibliographical works point to the person behind the pseudonym to be a fictional character taken from the work of Heinrich von Kleist, 1777-1811, who wrote the opera Der Prinz (Freidrich) von Homburg, and therefore 'F. von H.'
Note: Quedlinburg lies near the Harz Mountains in western Saxon-Anhalt, virtually the heart of Germany. The city represents a rare combination of ancient, medieval and modern historical and artistic treasures. Unlike other German cities such as Aachen, where Charlemagne (Karl der Grosse) held sway over the Franks, Quedlinburg is the birthplace of a Nation. It was namely in Quedlinburg that in 919 A.D. a Diet of noble ducal peers elected a German King, the Saxon Duke Heinrich, monarch of Germany-everything--, rather than merely a ruler of a local domain such as Bavarian or Rheinish or Hessian lands. The town has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Prince Victor Dhuleep Singh - (Pseudonym employed is Dummy) - Sometimes: Princesse V.D.S.
This name is an actual name from the aristocracy of Great Britain. In the Clubman, a newspaper or gazette of New York, published January 16, 1898 under the heading The Past Week In Society mentions the wedding of Prince Victor Dhuleep Singh to Lady anne Coventry in London. The article states that Bridge and bridgegroom went off in the happiest spirits, and the bridge looked radiant in her smart dress of pale gray with turquois blue. The first part of the honeymoon will be spent in Paris. Prince Victor gave his bridge some lovely jewels, among which were a crown of stars in diamonds, a large diamond bow with an enormous sapphire in the centre, a collar of several rows of pearls divided by diamond clasps a neklace of large uncat emeralds, a long rope of pearls, two emerald pins, and diamond, pearl, and sapphire rings. The Queen sent Prince Victor a beautiful little bronze statuette of herself.
On December 20, 1905, Gertrude Bell, a member of the English society, sent a letter to her mother from Gilbralter. Quote:
Dearest Mother,
We have had such a delightful voyage, the only pity was that it did not last longer. There is nothing so good for Father as being on a ship and he enjoys it so much. Already he looks better and I am much better. As good fortune wd have it we had 3 days of perfect weather and the ship was not very full so that the conditions were ideal. We were both very sorry to get off this morning. I found it an excellent place to work and revised and copied 3 chapters which was pretty good going.
We had plenty of people to play Bridge with; me (sic) friends Prince and Princess Victor Dhuleep Singh among them. I travelled with them on the same ship last year and they are remarkably good Bridge players. She is an Englishwoman and he a Mahratta (I think) but more English than the English and though his appearance is strange he is rather a good sort really - if you do not happen to be his creditor. The Francis Pease children were a great resource, two charming little girls, and as for Father he had made acquaintance with every one on the ship before we left and just hadn't time to begin on the Stoker boys, bless him!
We are going over to Algeciras to lunch and come back here for the night. This hotel seems quite comfortable and we have a luxurious sitting room looking out over the garden of the next house full of orange trees. Our boat goes to Tangier [Tanger] at 11 tomorrow morning.
Many many Christmas good wishes to you all. Your affectionate daughter Gertrude
Note: a Mahratta is a member of a people of the south central part of the subcontinent of India designated as Maharashtra. This is a historical region of west-central India. It was controlled by the Muslim rulers of India from the early 14th to the mid-17th century and incorporated by the British into the province of Bombay in the 19th century. The Marathi-speaking section of the region became a separate state in 1960.

Proctor, Richard Anthony (March 23, 1837 - September 12, 1888) - Pseudonym Five of Clubs
Short Biography: Richard Anthony Prochter, astronomer, born in Chelsea, England, 23 March, 1837. He entered King's college, London, in 1855, and a year later went to Cambridge, where in 1860 he received his bachelor's degree. An early fondness for mathematics led to his making a specialty of astronomy, on which subject he has become the most fertile popular writer of his time. His original work in-eludes numerous researches on the stellar system, the law of distribution of stars, their motions, the relations between the stars and the nebulae, and the general constitution of the heavens. In 1869 he advanced, on theoretical grounds, a theory of the solar corona that has since been generally accepted, and also that of the inner complex solar atmosphere that was afterward advanced by Professor Charles A. Young. He was active in the transit-of-Venus expeditions of 1874 and 1882, and became involved in a dispute with the astronomer royal of England as to the best methods of observation. In 1873-'4 and in 1875-'6 he lectured in the principal cities of the United States, and in 1879 he left England for Australasia, and lectured in all of the larger towns of Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand. He visited the United States again in 1884, and, after lecturing in the leading cities, settled in St. Joseph, Missouri In 1866 he was elected a fellow of the Royal astronomical society, and in 1873 he was appointed an honorary fellow of King's college, London. He was honorary secretary of the Royal astronomical society and editor of its proceedings in 1872-'3.
Mr. Proctor established " Knowledge" as a weekly journal in 1881, but changed it to a monthly in 1885, which had a considerable circulation. In it he wrote on a great variety of subjects, including chess and whist. His literary work began in 1863, when he published in the "Cornhill Magazine" an article on "Double Stars." Among his numerous books are "Saturn and its System" (London, 1865); "Gnomonic Star Atlas" (1866); "Half-Hours with the Telescope" (1868)" "Half-Hours with Stars" (1869). "Other Worlds than Ours" (1870)" "Light Science for Leisure Hours" (3 series, 1871, 1873, and 1883) . "Elementary Astronomy" (1871)" "Border Land of Science " i1873)" "Transits of Venus --Past, Present, and Future" and "The Expanse of Heaven" (1874); and "Myths and Marvels of Astronomy" (1877). He has edited "The Knowledge Library," consisting of a series of works made up of papers that have appeared in his journal, among which are several of his own, notably "How to Play Whist" and "Home Whist" (1885). Since he became an American citizen he has published "Chance and Luck" (New York, 1887) "First Steps in Geometry" (1887); "Easy Lessons in Differential Calculus" (1887)" and "Old and New Astronomy," which is now (1888) issuing in parts. Pseudonym - Pseudonyms
Note: It is of the utmost importance for the reader to remember that many of the authors of publications, of whatever field, were adequately hindered by the society in general to actually reveal their identity openly. Therefore the use and employment of a 'pseudonym', a 'pen name'. Sometimes the concealment was not exactly completely intended since several authors simply used their initials, which could easily be solved by the reading public, but also as easily refuted or smilingly denied by the accused or discovered gentleman or gentlewoman.

The name was taken by him from a club, to which he belonged at the time he first took up his pen in behalf of the modern game. 'Cavendish', universally recognized as the leading whist authority ot doday, was born in London, England, November 2, 1831. A the age of nine he was sent to King's college School, whee he assures us, he was more attentive to his duties in the play-ground than in the class-room. He subsequently attended a private school in Brighton, and at the age of eighteen he was entered as a student at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London, where he did good work, being for a year dresser to the distinguished surgeon, Sir William Lawrence Bart. After passing his examinations, at the age of twenty-one, he immediately began his professional career. He remained inactive practice as a surgeon in London until the year 1872, when, finding it impossible to do full justice to both his medical and literary engagements, he decided to give up the former. Source: The Whist Reference Book.
Henry Jones began to write under the name of 'Cavendish' in the year 1862, and attained fame and popularity equalling, if not excelling, that of Hoyle as a writer and authority on Card Games. He was not only a keen and enthusiastic student of the methods of play and laws of games, but also a learned and reliable authority on their history, as may be seen by the Historical Introductions to his treatises on Whist, Ecarte, Piquet and Bezique, and his many essays in periodical publications. He was editor of the card column of 'TheField' from 1864 till his death in 1899. He contributed the articles on cards and on many card games to the 9th edition of the 'Encyclopaedia Britannica' and to 'Chambers's Encyclopaedia'.

One clue as to the identity is also the reference to Slambo, also a pseudonym of the person, who wrote (game) articles for the Westminster Gazette in London, England. A reference to the Westminster Gazette states that London is the only place in the United Kingdom, which possesses two-cent evening newspapers. One of these, the Westminster Gazette, edited with unfailing sagacity by Mr. J.A. Spender, exercises a profound influence on political thought. It is the most intellectual organ of the daily press in this country. The editorial articles in the Westminster Gazette stand in a class by themselves.
Also the following: This courageous (political) stand for conscience by an entire (newspaper) staff is a fine incident in the history of British jounalism. After an interval, Mr. George newnes, - now Sir George Newnes, Bart., M.P., - provided the money for establishing a new Liberal evening paper to be conducted by the old Pall Mall Gazette staff. The new paper was called the Westminster Gazette, and in 1893 began its honorable and successful career. Putnam's Monthly Magazine
The Putnam's Monthly Magazine of American Literature, Science and Art had its debut January 1853, and was published by G.P. Putnam & Co., New York, New York, United States. This entry is included for the fact that, although the game of Whist is not discussed in detail, the name of the game itself appeared multiple times in many articles as a pastime, as in Volume 15, Issue 27, March 1879, page 361, Heading: Table-Talk, (Author: unknown)
'Amusements': The culture of a people finds characteristic expression in their amusements, and by amusements do not understand the theatres and the circus chiefly: for all the threatres in the land would not hold one in five hundred of the people nightly, and ninety-five per cent. of the people never saw a play. Yet everybody has some sport, whether chess or baseball, dancing or charades, 'coasting' or negro-minstrels. The highest branch of the art of amusement is the quiet, healthful, and profitable entertainment of the family circle. A careful examination fo the stock in trade of the inventors and manufacturers of games, for the last holiday season, would convince any one that a good new game is as hard to invent as a good new motive power. Croquet was the last tolerable novelty in its kind, but does not bear condensation into parlor limits. Billards are the best of indoor games for the sedentary; bagatelle is an imperfect substitute. Whist and chess are perfect for those who need bodily repose and nervous stimulus; being cheap and compact. But these are all imported. The national game of the United Stages is not yet discovered. Our people are the reading people of the world, and their evening amusement must needs be instructive, literary, as well as defiant of routine, reverent toward sensitive feelings, dignified in tone, infinitely varied in expression. A Poetical Essay, 1790, Publisher: John Stockdale, London, England, (Note: this publication is of interest in that the author in the stead of the main character of the work, 'The Poet', utters a quaint invective against the dulness of whist and of whist players.)

Quarterly Review, The
The first issue of this journal appeared in March 1809, in London, England. The publication was an early nineteenth-century political-literary journal founded in England in March 1809 by Mr. John Murray, the illustrious London publisher. The journal was established by a small number of powerful literary and political mandarins, namely Walter (later Sir Walter) Scott, poet and novelist who in social, philosophical, and literary terms was a Romantic conservative and in Scottish political terms, a Unionist; by Mr. John Murray, whose father, also John Murray, had emigrated from Scotland in the previous century; and by Mr. George Canning, the brilliant, scheming leader of a liberal conservative faction in the Tory party. With their supporters and under the editorial tutelage of a fascinating if morally complicated man, Mr. William Gifford - who was a close literary associate of Canning's and was also well known to Scott and Murray - these men developed a journal that rapidly gained a high reputation among its largely middle-class English readership. By its supporters the Quarterly came to be looked up to as the repository of privileged knowledge gleaned from inside the highest Government circles. By its detractors the Quarterly became a dark agent of Government control, or as Hazlitt even more colourfully implied, the literary embodiment of the secret police.
This publication is included in this list since this journal also included several articles about the game of Whist. One contributor was Mr. William Pole with the article 'Modern Whist', No. 259, pages 43-71, in January 1871. The following link is to a .pdf file, which explains the Rules of Whist from an article appearing in 1880 as presented by the State Library of Victoria.

WCSH-Radio: Mr. Joseph Henry Rines built Portland’s first-class Congress Square Hotel. In 1925 his son started WCSH radio, Maine’s first commercial radio station, on the top floor of the hotel, thus the call letters WCSH. In 1953 Mr. Joseph Henry Rines’ grandson built a studio in the hotel’s dining room and launched the TV station. In 1977 the station moved across the street to its present location at One Congress Square, Portland, Maine.

Relevant excerpt: In 1922, to promote card playing, particularly bridge, USPC established a radio station called WSAI. Housed at the company's Norwood facilities, WSAI featured the show "Bridge by Radio" which provided bridge instruction from experts actually playing the game on the air. USPC operated WSAI until 1930. As contract bridge became increasingly popular in the decade that followed, the company's Congress brand emerged as a favorite brand of card for bridge.

History: In 1933, inspired entrepreneurs Mr. Nat Wartels and Mr. Bob Simon founded a book company named Outlet Book Company. With the goal of providing quality books at inexpensive prices, Mr. Nat Wartels and Mr. Bob Simon used innovative techniques to create new markets for the books, bringing Outlet Book Company to the forefront of bargain book publishing. Outlet Book Company also introduced the concept of reprinting bestselling books to sell at bargain prices. After re-organization the Outlet Book Company was renamed the Random House Value Publishing and is a division of Random House Inc., the largest English-language book publisher in the world. Among the reprints are also bridge publications, some commissioned.

Rochester Whist and Game Register, The
In tradition holding to and with many other major newspapers of that time or era, 1880s and 1890s and into the new century, many cities and even Whist Clubs and Whist Leagues, etc. would bond to publish a Register of all the years (sometimes several years) in which Whist events and championships and tournaments were held, listing the winners, the competitors, the dates and even names of the participants. A comparison, on a larger scale, would be The Tribune Almanac and Game Register published first by Mr. Horace Greeley. Published 1894. Publisher: Lyon Brothers, Rochester, New York. Their recipes and her recipes are preserved in this book.
Note: Helen Pendelton Rockwell also donated the Rockwell Trophy for Mixed Pairs in 1946 and is presented to the winners of this national bridge event. The event was contested at the Fall NABC until 1962. The venue was changed in the year 1963 to the Spring NABC.

Rowlands, Samuel
The works of Samuel Rowlands have nothing to do with the game of Whist. He is, however, included since his publications provide insight into the society of that era in the United Kingdom, but not from the perspective of the ruling class, but from the other side of society. Samuel Rowlands wrote epigrams, which are short, but witty poems expressing a single thought or observation. It can also be a concise, clever, and often paradoxical statement. And it was this style, which sold to the public and Samuel Rowlands had to pay the rent.
However, some of his publications, however short, were not well received and were ordered by the authorities be burned: "Yt is orderd that the next court-day two bookes lately printed, th' one called The Letting of Humors Blood in the Head Vayne; th' other, A mery Metinge, or 'tis Mery when Kaves mete; shal be publiquely burnt, for that they conteyne matters unfytt to be published; then to be burnd in the Hall Kytchen, with other popish bookes and thinges that were lately taken."
A very early 'book burning' incidence, which only stirred the reading community to obtain access to these publications, poems, prose, and tracts in any manner possible. This incident actually stamped Samuel Rowlands as a popular contemporary. His works, although dealing with the society in general, also employ the ambiguity of the designations for the suits of cards: Knave, for example, can have several meanings, such as 1. an unprincipled, crafty fellow, 2. a male servant, 3. a man of humble birth, 4. a dishonest person, 5. a deceitful and unreliable scoundrel, 6. one of four face cards in a deck bearing a picture of a young prince.
