Mr. Hugh Walter Kelsey, born 1926 and died March 18, 1995 at Edinburgh, Scotland, was a bridge player, author and writer. He won the Gold Cup, the most prestigious British competition, twice, in 1969 and 1980. He represented Scotland twelve times in the Camrose Trophy, played between the constituent countries of the British Isles. He was the non-playing captain of the Great Britain Women's Team in the 7th World Team Olympiad held at Seattle in 1984.
However it is as a writer and an author, that he will be best and most remembered. He penned more than fifty books on the game of bridge, mostly targeted for the intermediate to advanced players. It is a measure of their quality of these publications that many of them are still in print. Two of his books, Killing Defence at Bridge and Advanced Play at Bridge were listed by the Official Encyclopedia of Bridge as mandatory requirements for a modern technical bridge library. His publication, Adventures in Card Play, written with Mr. Geza Ottlik, is still regarded by many as the most advanced book on the play of the cards. He was the bridge columnist for The Scotsman, and wrote many articles for bridge magazines. He was the International Bridge Press Association's Personality of the Year in 1993.
The visitor will find that many of the publications were printed by Gollancz, (Biography of Mr. Victor Gollancz, 1893-1967) which has changed designations over the course of time. The attempt has been made, most likely unsuccessfully, to present the accurate designation of the time of publication. A brief history of the publishing house acquisitions is presented below for the Orion Publishing Group.

Foundation: The Orion Publishing Group Limited was founded in 1991. Soon after, Orion began negotiations with Lord Weidenfeld and acquired Weidenfeld & Nicolson as the nucleus of a new, entrepreneurial publishing group. The W&N imprint, founded in 1949, was an established brand name with a consistent history of quality publishing. Since the 1980s, the imprints under the Weidenfeld umbrella included JM Dent and Everyman Paperbacks.
The Orion Paperback Division was successfully launched in 1993 and two more acquisitions were made at the start of that year. Orion bought the assets of Chapman Publishers, a small general publishing house. The second acquisition was a warehousing and distribution centre, Littlehampton Book Services, based in Sussex.
In 1998, a majority of the share capital of the Orion Publishing Group was sold to Hachette Livre, the French publishing arm of the Lagardere Group. In 2003 Hachette Livre became the sole owner of the group.
In December 1998 the group acquired the publishing house Cassell & Co, whose imprints included Victor Gollancz Ltd. In January 2002, with the acquisition of the Octopus Publishing Group by Hachette Livre, the popular illustrated imprints of Cassell & Co were transferred to the Octopus Group. As a result, the Cassell Reference and Cassell Military lists were joined with the Weidenfeld imprints to form a new division under the name of Weidenfeld & Nicolson Ltd.
