ANTI Against No Trump

The origin of this concept or conventional method is unknown. This is a designation for a defense method against a No Trump opening by an opponent. The bids are designed to show either a one-suited holding or a two-suited holding by the intervenor. The advancer is the partner of the intervenor.

The following schematic illustrates the usage of this concept:

Intervenor:

Double: A double is natural and is generally for penalty. The advancer is required to pass. The double promises at least a 15 plus point holding.
2 : Shows either Diamonds or a two-suited holding in both Major suits.

Advancer:

2 : This bid is to play opposite Diamonds. If the intervenor does not have Diamonds, then the intervenor corrects to 2 showing a two-suited in the Major suits.
2 : This bid is to play in Hearts if the holding of the intervenor is a two-suited Major suit holding. The intervenor corrects to 3 if the intervenor holds Diamonds.
2 : This bid is to play in Spades if the holding of the intervenor is a two-suited Major suit holding. The intervenor corrects to 3 if the intervenor holds Diamonds.
2 NT: This bid is employed as an artificial enquiry requesting additional information. This bid is based on a moderate to good holding by the advancer.

Intervenor:

2 : This is an artificial, two-way bid signifying either Hearts or Spades and an unspecified Minor suit.

Advancer:

2 : This bid is to play in Hearts. If the intervenor holds Spades and n unspecified Minor suit, then the intervenor corrects to 2 to show this holding.
2 : This bid is to play in Spades. The intervenor corrects to 3 if Hearts is the suit of the intervenor.
2 NT: This bid is employed as an artificial enquiry requesting additional information. This bid is based on a moderate to good holding by the advancer.

Intervenor:

2 : This bid shows Hearts and an unspecified Minor suit.

Advancer:

2 NT: This bid is employed as an artificial enquiry requesting additional information. This bid is based on a moderate to good holding by the advancer.

Intervenor:

2 : This is a natural bid and promises Spades.
2 NT: This is an artificial bid and promises a two-suited holding in both Minor suits.

The number of high card points becomes secondary to the shape of the holding, which becomes its strength. The length of the suits may / should be determined by the state of vulnerability, and the responses are per partnership agreement as is any auction continuance.

If you wish to include this feature, or any other feature, of the game of bridge in your partnership agreement, then please make certain that the concept is understood by both partners. Be aware whether or not the feature is alertable or not and whether an announcement should or must be made. Check with the governing body and/or the bridge district and/or the bridge unit prior to the game to establish the guidelines applied. Please include the particular feature on your convention card in order that your opponents are also aware of this feature during the bidding process, since this information must be made known to them according to the Laws of Duplicate Contract Bridge. We do not always include the procedure regarding Alerts and/or Announcements, since these regulations are changed and revised during time by the governing body. It is our intention only to present the information as concisely and as accurately as possible.
