Two Diamonds Negative Response
Once the auction has been opened with a Strong Artificial 2 Clubs bid, the partner is then forced to bid. Independent of his holding, the partner must respond, because his partner is showing a hand which almost warrants game. The partner has either a holding with 4 or fewer Losing Tricks and a balanced holding or a single-suited holding. The holding may also be a two-suited holding.
In order to show a holding with fewer than 7 high card points, even a holding with zero high card points, the Two Diamond Negative Response has been devised to show these minimum values of fewer than seven high card points.

With this holding, having no distributional values and no points, the responder would respond with 2 and pass the rebid of the opener. |
Although the responder does not have sufficient values for game in Example 1, after the opener has shown his values, the responder can continue to game even with only 2 high card points due to his distribution. However, with no values and no distribution as in Example 2, the responder is permitted to pass a 2 No Trump rebid by the opener. The rebid by the opener should not be considered game-forcing under any circumstances when using the Two Diamond Negative Response.
Note: Several partnerships have agreed that if the responder has a very good Diamond suit, and a hand worth a positive response, then the partner should show his very good Diamond suit by jumping one level and bid 3 Diamonds. There are certain flaws to this partnership agreement, which are obvious. Whatever the partnership agrees upon, it should be included in the partnership agreement.
If you wish to include this feature, or any other feature, of the game of bridge in your partnership agreement, then please make certain that the concept is understood by both partners. Be aware whether or not the feature is alertable or not and whether an announcement should or must be made. Check with the governing body and/or the bridge district and/or the bridge unit prior to the game to establish the guidelines applied. Please include the particular feature on your convention card in order that your opponents are also aware of this feature during the bidding process, since this information must be made known to them according to the Laws of Duplicate Contract Bridge. We do not always include the procedure regarding Alerts and/or Announcements, since these regulations are changed and revised during time by the governing body.
