After Mr. George Boehm of New York first described the principles behind the concept designated as lebensohl, this convention has undergone several changes to include certain bidding situations. Using lebensohl for solving the bidding situation created for the responder after his partner has opened the auction with 1 No Trump, and there has been an immediate overcall, has proven effective.

However, Advanced lebensohl deals with the bidding situation created for the responder of the opener, who has opened the auction in a suit, and there is an immediate overcall of 1 No Trump. This variant of Lebensohl was devised by Mr. Glenn McIntyre of Boston, Massachusetts, United States.

First: Mr. Glenn McIntyre suggested that all responses, after a 1 No Trump overcall, between 2 No Trump and 3 Hearts are to be considered transfers to the next higher ranking suit. This assumes that the responder has the corresponding strength and length to request that the opener, his partner, bid on the three level.

Second: Mr. Glenn McIntyre also suggested that the opener have the possibility of accepting the transfer, in order to deny any game interest. If this is the case, then the final contract has been reached, unless the opponents attempt to sacrifice.

Third: If the opener, however, does not wish to accept the transfer, the opener may make another bid, which is forcing to game.

It is also of interest to note that Mr. Glenn McIntyre left the possibility open in case the responder bids 2 No Trump, that this bid could either be a transfer to Clubs or a possible slow Stayman bid, or even the attempt to have the responder sign off in three Diamonds or three Hearts, depending on the holding of the responder, but only if these two suits could not have been bid on the two level.

In whatever context the partnership applies the principles behind Advanced lebensohl, it is of the utmost importance that the partnership have a definite understanding of the bids made after a bidding situation has been created.
