The date of the development of this particular concept employed as a defense method by the competition remains unknown. Known is, however, that one of the world's leading bridge personality conceived it early in his bridge career.

Definition of the Concept

The partnership agreement is that the partnership, in competition, uses the bid of 3 No Trump as a takeout after a preemptive bid by the opposing side on the three level in a Major suit only. The call of a double is for penalty. If the preempt is in a Minor suit, then a double is takeout, even in the pass-out seat.

Note: the agreement that the call of double is for penalty lies in the fact that, in all probability, a better result can be achieved if the call is for penalty.

At first this concise explanation may be confusing. The student should remember, above all else, that if the preemptive bid by the opposing side is a Major suit, then a double is for penalty. Conversely, if the preemptive bid by the opposing side is a Minor suit, then a double is for takeout.
