Short Club Opening Bids

Authored by Mr. Mark Abraham and Mr. Griff Ware and published online April 20, 2009, the Short Club Variant consists of multiple opening bids for all four suits on the one level. The continuations allow the partnership to discover or reveal the relevant definition. Opening Bids Only

Bid   Strength   Meaning
Pass:       Denies the ability or desire to open with a bid.
1 :   11-14 high card points   Shows either a balanced holding of 2-4 - 2-4, 2-5 - 2-5, or
    11 plus high card points   shows a three-suited holding with 4-4-1-4, or
    11 plus high card points   shows unbalanced distribution with 0-3 - 5+.
1 :   11 plus high card points   Shows either an unbalanced holding with 5 plus Diamonds, or
    11 plus high card points   shows an unbalanced holding with 4 - 5+, or
    11 plus high card points   shows a three-suited holding with 4 plus Diamonds.
1 :   11-14 high card points   Shows either a balanced holding with 2-3 - 5 - 2-3 - 2-3, or
    11 plus high card points   shows an unbalanced holding with 5+.
1 :   11-14 high card points   Shows either a balanced holding with 5 - 2-3 - 2-3 - 2-3, or
    11 plus high card points   shows an unbalanced holding with 5+.
1 NT:   15-17 high card points   Shows a balanced distribution. Note: a 5-card Major suit is expected; unorthodox shapes permitted).
2 :   18-19 high card points   Shows either a balanced holding (as above).
2 :   23+ high card points   Shows any game-forcing holding with balanced distribution.
2 :   5-9 high card points   Preemptive, (values are approximated), 4+, 4+, undisciplined, but length disparity greater than one card is not permitted.
2 :   5-9 high card points   Preemptive, (values are approximated), 5+, undisciplined.
2NT:   20-22 high card points   Shows balanced distribution.
3(x):   5-9 high card points   Preemptive, (values are approximated), 6+(x)
3 NT:       Specific Ace ask.

Be aware whether or not the feature is alertable or not and whether an announcement should or must be made. Check with the governing body and/or the bridge district and/or the bridge unit prior to the game to establish the guidelines applied. Please include the particular feature on your convention card in order that your opponents are also aware of this feature during the bidding process, since this information must be made known to them according to the Laws of Duplicate Contract Bridge.
