Above The Line and Below The Line

In the game of Rubber Bridge, the scoring is as illustrated as in the example below.

The first contract is 2 Diamonds by North and an overtrick is made. The contract of 2 Diamonds has been fulfilled and a score of 40 points is entered below the line. However, for the one overtrick, a 20 points are added above the line.

The second contract is 1 Spade by East and three overtricks are made. Only the 30 points for the contract are entered below the line, and 90 points for the three overtricks are entered above the line.

The third contract is 3 Spades by North with one undertrick. North/South receive no score below the line, but East/West are awarded 50 points for the undertrick above the line.

The fourth contract is 4 Hearts doubled by South with two undertricks. North/South receive no score below the line, but East/West are awarded 300 points above the line, since neither side is vulnerable.

The fifth contract is 3 Hearts doubled by West with two undertricks. North/South receive 300 points above the line, whereas East/West receive no score.

The sixth contract is 5 Clubs by West with one undertrick. East/West receive no score, and North/South are awarded 50 points above the line.

On the seventh contract, East/West bid and make 3 Spades and one overtrick. East/West receive 90 points below the line and 30 points above the line. East/West are now vulnerable.

If one team, in this example, receives 100 points or more below the line, then this team becomes vulnerable. If, in this example, East/West receives twice in a row 100 points or more below the line, then East/West receive a bonus of 700 points above the line.

If, however, North/South receives 100 points or more below the line before East/West, then North/South become vulnerable. This means that both teams are vulnerable, and the first team to receive another 100 points or more below the line then receives 500 bonus points above the line.
