The dobi double originated with and was developed by Mr. Melih Ozdil of Turkey. According to the author the doubles were named in memory of his lovely dog Dobi. The picture below shows Mr. Melih Ozdil. Website in Turkey. Website in English.

Note: The correct spelling of the name is with the umlaut: Mr. Melih Özdil, which may not appear correctly on all screens. He is also the author of the following publications: Playing NT Games, 1NT Opening and Developments, Bridge Millenium, Minor Suit Opening and Developments, Playing Trump Games, Turkish Bridge History, Takeout Doubles.

The Dobi Double

The dobi double is employed generally in the immediate seat following the opening of a strong No Trump by the opponent. A strong No Trump is defined with a range between 15 and 18 high card points.

The immediate double by the next player in rotation shows the following:

1. either one Major suit and one Minor suit, or
2. a good holding with a long Major suit containing a minimum of 8.5 winning tricks.

Note: For the complete explanation Mr. Melih Ozdil has the write-up on his home page of his website. This information has only been archived and preserved on this site in .pdf file format for future reference.

Note: This concept is based on that fact that the double of the next player in rotation of a weak No Trump is for penalty. A weak No Trump is defined as any No Trump opening bid with any range between 10 and 14 high card points and balanced distribution.

Bidding Sequence

Continuances Following the Rebids by Opener

Opener   Intervenor   Responder   Advancer   Meaning
1 NT               A strong No Trump with a range between 15 and 18 high card points.
Double           This is the Dobi Double. The advancer may not pass unless the responder enters the competitive auction.
Pass   2 NT   When holding possible game values the advancer asks first for the Minor suit and if partner shows Clubs, then the advancer's following rebid becomes an invitation to bid game in the Major suit. If the intervenor bids Diamonds as the second suit, then the continuances are per partnership agreement.

Pass   3           Shows a minimal holding with Spades.
4           Bidding game shows maximum values with Heart support.
4/ 4           By returning to the Minor suit the intervenor promises maximum values and Spade support.

Continuances Following a 2 No Trump Rebid by Advancer

Opener   Intervenor   Responder   Advancer   Meaning
1 NT               A strong No Trump with a range between 15 and 18 high card points.
Double           This is the Dobi Double. The advancer may not pass unless the responder enters the competitive auction.
Pass   2   The advancer inquires as to which Major suit partner holds. Generally the advancer will hold approximately equal values in both Major suits.
Pass   2 / 2           The intervenor identifies the Major suit.
2 NT   This continuance by the advancer is an invitational relay bid.
In a bidding sequence, generally still on the two level, whereby the advancer first bids 2 Diamonds and then 2 No Trump, then this provides the intervenor with the opportunity to more clearly define his holding, such as values (combined with values of advancer) to bid on the three level and also distribution.
Pass   3 / 3           The intervenor, by bidding the respective Major suit, promises a 5-card Minor suit and a 4-card Major suit. However, by not jumping the intervenor shows only minimum values.
3 NT           By bidding 3 No Trump the intervenor shows maximum values and the distribution of a 5-card Minor suit and a 5-card Major suit.
3           By bidding only the Major suit, then the intervenor shows a 5-card Heart suit and minimum values.
3           By bidding only the Major suit, then the intervenor shows a 5-card Spade suit and minimum values.
3 / 3           Since the Major suit of the intervenor has been established, then by rebidding the other Major suit the intervenor shows a 5-card Major suit and maximum values.

Continuances Following a Redouble by Responder

Opener   Intervenor   Responder   Advancer   Meaning
1 NT               A strong No Trump with a range between 15 and 18 high card points.
Double           This is the Dobi Double. The advancer may not pass unless the responder enters the competitive auction.
Redouble       The responder of the opener enters the auction with a redouble. (Note: The significance of the redouble may be important and it would be prudent for the advancer to inform himself.)
Pass   By passing the advancer shows one long Minor suit. Otherwise the advancer enters the auction by default and which is described in one on the bidding sequences described above. If the advancer has neither values nor distributional support, then the advancer must remove himself from the bidding sequence as quickly as possible.

Continuances by Intervenor Following a Pass After a Redouble

Pass               By passing the 1 No Trump redoubled the opener believes that this is the preferred contract. This partnership should have an understanding that the responder should have originally sufficient values and distribution to raise partner at least one level in No Trump.
2           As much as this is an escape bid it also provides the advancer to show his Minor suit, if there is a Minor suit. The advancer may bid or may pass this bid if Clubs is considered the preferable place for a contract.
2           In this bidding sequence the intervenor shows with this bid a long Diamond suit, moderate strength, and also either a void or a singleton Club. The advancer may pass with very weak values and at least a 2-card Diamond support.
Note: Mr. Melih Öhdil suggest that if the Diamond suit is considered by the player to be weak in working values, then the intervenor, in this bidding sequence should first bid Clubs to show a singleton in Clubs, and hoping that the advancer correct to Diamonds. (Note: This inclusion may possibly cover a rare situation and this is the reason for its inclusion.)
