One source for this particular double is The Bridge World, June 1987, Volume 58, Number 9, and authored by Mr. Jerold (Jerry) Fink, who also co-authored American Forcing Minor System and Count Coded Leads together with Mr. Joe Lutz and also Cincinnati Power Defense Carding, co-authored with Judy Cohn.

Parking Lot Redouble

The parking lot redouble agreement is an aid to the overcaller's side after the opener's side has doubled for takeout. The redouble assists in locating a better place to play the hand and/or to pinpoint the best lead if the partnership has to defend. The parking lot redouble is employed after an overcall in a suit and the opponents double (for takeout) and also when we preempt (through 3 Diamonds) and the opponents double for takeout. The parking lot redouble can also be employed when we open 1 of a Minor suit, or by an opener after RHO has balanced with a double.

The sequence is:

1. The opponents open the auction - we overcall - the next opponent in rotation or the player after two passes doubles for takeout.
2. We open the auction with one of a suit or a preemptive bid - the opponents overcall or double (for takeout).

Reminder: parking lot redoubles are employed through an overcall of 3 Diamonds. This means also that they are also employed if the opponents open with a preemptive bid of 3 Clubs.

The applicable guidelines are shown below and are taken from the article as published by Mr. Jerold Fink:

1. A raise shows a key honor (King or Ace) in the raised suit, even jump raises.
2. A redouble asks overcaller to bid the next cheapest suit. You have a place to park the hand, with no lead direction.
3. A redouble followed by a return to partner's suit shows a topless raise.
4. A redouble followed by a new suit (or pass) is to play.
5. A 1 No Trump over the double shows a Queen raise, (Qxx or Qxxx).
6. A 2 No Trump over the double is invitational with no lead direction, it is a raise.
7. A 3 NT over the double is not to play, but is a preemptive raise.

The following shows the particular guidelines for certain bidding sequences:

1. We Preempt: Parking Lot Redoubles are used through the 3 Diamond preemptive opening and double for takeout. See above methods.
2. We Open 1 Club or 1 Diamond (optional): If agreed, then Parking Lot Redoubles can be used when they double our opening bid of 1 of a minor. See methods above. In practice, I did not like the use of Parking lot for this situation.
3. When the opponents reopen our 1-bid:
  For example:
   
Opener   LHO   Responder   RHO
1-bid   Pass   Pass   Double
    A. Any new suit bid by opener is a lead-directing self raise.
    B. A Redouble forces responder to relay in next cheapest suit (if LHO passes), so that opener may name a second suit.
4. Following an Unusual No Trump or following a Michaels overcall:
    1. The Parking Lot Redouble can be employed when the opponents double our bid showing a two-suited holding.
      A. Any suit bid then becomes lead-directing.
      B. A redouble requests partner to bid the next cheapest suit so that advancer can place the contract without lead direction.

It must also be noted that Mr. Robert D. Sundby authored the publication Bridge In The '80s, Featuring The Comfortable Club in 1984, published by Breakthrough Bridge Enterprises, which provides additional information regarding Parking Lot Redoubles. However, we have no access to this publication and this is unsubstantiated. Any contribution for clarification would be greatly appreciated.

Note: Aside from the explanations provided above for the parking lot redouble, it must be emphasized that the parking lot redouble is only employed by the responder (or advancer as the case may be) so that the possibility is kept open to communicate more descriptive, if not more accurate information to partner.

The employment of the parking lot redouble provides the partnership with the opportunity to make an important distinction between raises with meager or inadequate trump support and raises, whereby the holding contains a top honor, generally Queen or higher.

When, in the bidding auction, the parking lot redouble is not overcalled, then this demands that the partner (either the opener or intervenor) relay with the next-higher suit above the doubled suit. If the parking lot redouble, on the other hand, is overcalled, the partner (advancer) is not required to bid or compete.

Note: Upon experience and scrutiny of the call double, and its employment, it has been established that the parking lot redouble and the SOS or S.O.S. Rescue Redouble are not compatible and can lead only to ambiguity and confusion if the partnership agreement contains both.

 

 

If you wish to include this feature, or any other feature, of the game of bridge in your partnership agreement, then please make certain that the concept is understood by both partners. Be aware whether or not the feature is alertable or not and whether an announcement should or must be made. Check with the governing body and/or the bridge district and/or the bridge unit prior to the game to establish the guidelines applied. Please include the particular feature on your convention card in order that your opponents are also aware of this feature during the bidding process, since this information must be made known to them according to the Laws of Duplicate Contract Bridge. We do not always include the procedure regarding Alerts and/or Announcements, since these regulations are changed and revised during time by the governing body.
