In order to arrange a full Individual Movement with all possible partnerships, the arrangement has the disadvantage of either being too short with 15 or 17 boards, or long with 30 or 34 boards. Due to this shortness of length of the Individual Movement, a reduced tournament is somewhat preferable.

As a Pair event, the Howell Movement, with seven rounds, is preferable to the Mitchell Movement with only four rounds. In this case, either three or four boards may be played at each round.

Mitchell Movement

If the Mitchell Movement is chosen, then Tables 1 and 4 must relay the boards during the course of the tournament. A byestand is placed between Tables 2 and 3. The boards are moved from Table 4 to Table 3 to the byestand and then to Table 2 and Table 1, where the boards are then shared with Table 4. Each East-West pairs move up.

The board-sharing can be avoided by using the following schedule:

  Table 1   Table 2   Table 3   Table 4
Round NS EW   B   NS EW   B   NS EW   B   NS EW   B
1 1 5   1   2 6   2   3 7   3   4 8   4
2 1 6   4   2 5   3   3 8   2   4 7   1
3 1 7   2   2 8   1   3 5   4   4 6   3
4 1 8   3   2 7   4   3 6   1   4 5   2

Team of Four

As a team-of-four event, three stanzas are required. In the first stanza, traveling pairs of teams 1 and 2 exchange places, as do the traveling pairs 2 and 4. The boards are relayed between Table 1 and Table 2 and between Table 3 and Table 4.

In the second stanza, traveling pairs of teams 1 play at Table 3 and team 3 at Table 1. Similarly with teams 2 and 4.

In the third stanza, teams 1 and 4 and teams 2 and 3 interchange traveling pairs, and relay the boards.

The boards are reshuffled at the end of each stanza, and the six matches are scored individually using Board-a-Match, Total Point, or IMPs. A tie is broken with summation from the three matches at board-a-match, total point or IMPs.

The following schedule may also be used instead, where 1-4 are the teams and (a) and (b) denotes the two pairs in each team.

  Table 1   Table 2   Table 3   Table 4
Round NS EW   B   NS EW   B   NS EW   B   NS EW   B
1 1a 2b   1   2a 3b   2   3a 4a   4   4b 1b   5
