OnePlus has officially taken the wraps off its latest flagship phone, the Ace 3, during a launch event in China. As rumored, the Ace 3 packs some seriously impressive specs including Qualcomm’s newest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, a large 5,500mAh battery with blistering 100W charging, an extra-slim bezel display with LTPO 3.0 variable refresh rate up to 120Hz, and much more. Let’s dive into the details.

Display and Design

The OnePlus Ace 3 features a massive 6.7-inch OLED display with slim 1.5mm bezels and a hole-punch front camera. OnePlus is calling its new panels “Procrhon” displays.

Some key highlights of the Procrhon panel:

  • LTPO 3.0 technology enabling a variable refresh rate from 1-120Hz for smoother visuals and battery savings
  • 144Hz touch sampling rate for super responsive gaming
  • 10-bit colors and HDR10+ high dynamic range support
  • 1500 nits peak brightness with 4096 dimming zones

OnePlus says the Ace 3 has the highest screen-to-body ratio of any OnePlus phone yet at 95.5%, enabled by the tiny 1.5mm bezels.

For design, the Ace 3 has a glass sandwich build with Gorilla Glass protection on front and back. It measures 163 × 74.1 × 8.7mm and weighs around 205g. Colors include black, green, and purple.

Performance and Hardware

The OnePlus Ace 3 is among the first phones powered by Qualcomm’s brand new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform. Built on a 4nm process, the chip delivers upwards of a 35% boost to CPU and GPU performance versus last year’s model.

Key specs:

  • Qualcomm SM8550 Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 4nm chip
  • Up to 16GB LPDDR5X RAM
  • Up to 1TB UFS 4.0 storage
  • 3D vapor cooling chamber system

For connectivity, the OnePlus Ace 3 includes the latest Wi-Fi 7 standard (802.11be) with speeds reaching 6.5 Gbps theoretical peak. There’s also 5G, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, and more.

The phone runs OxygenOS 13.1 based on Android 13 out of the box. OnePlus promises 4 major OS updates and 5 years of security patches.

Cameras

OnePlus equipped the Ace 3 with a pro-grade triple camera array:

  • 50MP main Sony IMX890 sensor with OIS
  • 8MP ultra-wide lens
  • 2MP macro camera

The selfie camera comes in at 16MP. While the hardware itself isn’t revolutionary, OnePlus says its tuning and processing plays a huge role in determining image quality. Shooting modes include nightscape, HDR, panorama, portrait, pro mode, and more. The Ace 3 can record 4K video at up to 60 fps.

Battery and Charging

This is where things get really interesting. The OnePlus Ace 3 houses an enormous 5,500 mAh battery for what OnePlus claims is all-day endurance even under heavy use.

Making things even better is support for staggering 100W wired charging. OnePlus says you can juice up from 1-50% in just 10 minutes. It also supports 50W wireless charging to go from 1-100% in under an hour.

Here’s a comparison versus other recent flagships:

Phone Battery (mAh) Wired Charging
OnePlus Ace 3 5,500 100W
iPhone 15 Pro 3,200 27W
Galaxy S24 5,000 45W

Pricing and Availability

The OnePlus Ace 3 starts at CNY 2,699 in China (about $400 USD) for a model with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage. A maxed out 16GB/1TB variant costs CNY 3,999 ($590).

Variant Price in China
8GB/128GB CNY 2,699
8GB/256GB CNY 2,999
12GB/512GB CNY 3,499
16GB/1TB CNY 3,999

The phone will first go on sale in China on January 15. An international launch is also expected soon under the name OnePlus 12R. Given the cutting edge display, blazing performance, and class-leading charging, the OnePlus Ace 3 shapes up as a formidable Galaxy S24 rival in 2024. We’ll know for sure once full reviews land.

What Experts Are Saying

Early hands-on impressions of the OnePlus Ace 3 are quite positive:

“With the new Ace 3, OnePlus just schooled its rivals on what a modern Android flagship should offer” – Android Authority

“That insane 100W charging is a game-changer…goes from 0-50% battery in just 10 minutes!” – Marques Brownlee

“Class-leading display with slim bezels…LAClippers alright!” – Built for Basketball

We’ll have to wait for in-depth reviews, but it’s clear OnePlus isn’t messing around with their latest release. Between the flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 platform, cutting-edge LTPO 3.0 120Hz display with slim bezels, huge battery and unprecedented charging speeds, the Ace 3 brings some serious heat to kick off 2024.

Samsung and Apple have been put on notice. The Ace 3 could give the Galaxy S24 and iPhone 15 their toughest competition yet when it launches globally as the OnePlus 12R. Exciting times ahead!
